DOES anybody know how many documentaries have been made about the
Gazillions, I’m sure, covering everything from gruesome deaths
at the Colosseum to Julius Caesar’s favourite bedtime snack.
OK, I’m guessing the last one, but it wouldn’t surprise
me if an entire programme has been made about the subject.
This genteel new series covers the entire history of the Roman
Empire and gets off to an original start by going back to 800 BC, a time
when Rome didn’t even exist.
Back then the Etruscans were the big success story of the day, an
advanced civilisation with talented engineers and architects.
They taught the Romans everything they knew.
And then, typically, their student got too big for his boots and
overthrew them, nicking all their ideas and claiming them for his own.
Have you heard of Etruscan orgies before? No? Now you know why.
