With much fanfare in 2010, the Nalanda University was opened in Bihar on the back of a political dream to revive the ancient glory of the university, which historians say was one of the oldest seats of learning in the world.

The ancient Nalanda University was built sometime in the 5th century BC. It braved several invasions, and was finally ransacked and destroyed by Turkish military general Bakhtiyar Khilji in around 1200 AD. The ruins of the university have withstood the ravages of time refusing to disappear altogether, serving as a reminder of its lost glory.

The modern Nalanda University takes inspiration from its ancient precursor. Its mandate is to be an “international institution for the pursuit of intellectual, philosophical, historical and spiritual studies”.

To find out its current status after a decade of establishment, India Today filed a Right to Information (RTI) query with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which is the nodal body for this university.

Among the questions posed to the MEA were:

1. How much money has the Government of India spent on it?

2. How much money has been received from other countries?

3. What is the number of students, who have been enrolled and how many passed out?

4. How many regular students are there, at present, in the main course and how many teaching and nonteaching staffs are there?

5. Who are the top ten officials of the university drawing maximum salary and allowances?

The MEA, in response said, the Nalanda University came into existence in 2010 but academic courses commenced from the year 2014. So far, it has got around Rs 964 crore as grant from the government. It has also got around Rs 18 crore as endowment funds from foreign countries.

From 2014 to 2020, the Nalanda University enrolled 710 regular students, 97 per cent of whom successfully completed their courses. Currently, there are 172 regular students, 24 teaching staff, 18 visiting or guest faculty and 40 non-teaching staff at the university.

Annual salary of the vice-chancellor of the Nalanda University is $ 80,000. This comes around Rs 4.83 lakh per month.
